One Outfit Makes All the Difference: It's About Your Child — Not the Closet

August 14, 20252 min read

When planning your child’s portrait session, it’s natural to want every detail just right; from the lighting to the location to the outfit. But when it comes to capturing genuine personality, simplicity makes all the difference. Choosing one outfit ahead of time isn’t just practical, it helps keep the focus where it belongs, on your child.

Steve and I had the pleasure of working with Serena for her 5-year-old portrait session. Her mom had been planning this with us for months. We had discussed everything from lighting to styling and even where in their home the final portrait would hang. Everything was set except for the final outfit choice.  After Serena’s hair appointment that morning in Raleigh, the family arrived at our studio in North Durham with five gorgeous dresses to choose from. Understandably, each one had its own charm. But that tiny detail became a big decision.

We started photographing Serena in Jessica’s favorite peach dress, but after a long day, Serena wasn't quite in the mood. She was all the way five I tell you!  Playful, strong-willed, but completely herself. Steve and I are seasoned in working with young children, so we pivoted, adapted, and gave Serena the space she needed.

After three outfit changes and nearly an hour, we finally got “the shot”—her expression was perfect. Steve and I knew instantly it was the winner. But then came the twist: Jessica softly remarked, “Shoot, I wish that was in the other dress.”

It was a moment that reminded me why outfit indecision can quietly steal the spotlight. Portraits are powerful when they reveal personality and emotion. Swapping outfits mid-session can disrupt momentum and dilute focus. What stays timeless isn't the fabric—it’s the sparkle in your child’s eyes, their authentic grin, the way they scrunch their nose when they laugh.

At 505 Photography, our goal is to tell your child’s story—not stage a fashion show. So when planning your session, take time to choose one special outfit that reflects your vision. Then let your little one take center stage. Because when the moment comes, it’s not about the dress—it’s about the child wearing it.
